Ida in Beijing (Part 1)
I was in Beijing from 23 to 27 April 2005 for a work trip. Here's me in the Palace. I will write more about the trip when I have time.

My New Hobby
Before the Beijing trip, I was busy working on my new hobby -- plaster and molding and colouring. I got some box sets from the children's section at Page One. They are supposed to be for five and up!
I've made myself a little box, which is in the office right now to store the washroom key :P
I've also made Rita and Billy their alphabets. But Billy's not happy that "B is for Butterfly" :) and kept talking about it.
I am supposed to devote my weekends on this new hobby. But well, the preparation of the Beijing trip made me extremely busy and tired. I will pick it up soon when live is back to normal.

Long time no write
I haven't written for long. Hope everyone is fine.
I am extremely busy lately. Working, working, working...working day and night and night and day and weekdays and weekends as well...
Poor Ida.
I expect here will be less busy and I should have more leisure. Well, life not always goes as expected.
I will be going to a work trip to Beijing from 24 to 27 April. Before that, I will stay busy...

Sick
I caught a cold and was sicked all week last week and am still coughing almost non-stop today :(
I slept 11 hours every day last week, and did nothing except going to work semi-functioning each day. I should had stayed at home though, as I infected almost everyone in the team already :P
This weekend will be Easter. If there's not an urgent meeting tomorrow, I guess I will stay in holiday mood all week!
I will spend sometimes to update my blog (see the links I added on the side) during the Easter long weekend. If you haven't told me your blog yet, do let me know so I could include it to mine.

Rita and Billy's wedding tomorrow
It's Rita and Billy's wedding tomorrow. Because of this special occasion, we got together to dig out memories from the old days.
I know this couple since university years and they were already together that time. While I was depressed, it's Rita and Billy and others that were by my side to show support.
I am trying to make a powerpoint of old pictures, showing Rita and Billy at different stages together. With each picture, we will invite old friends to share with all the guests at the banquet something about Rita and Billy.
I contacted Alice for some old pictures of the couple yesterday (last minute preparation!). In return, we got a voice clip from Alice telling us the three's friendship, how Rita and Billy care each other, her blessing to the couple. It's so touching. That should be a very special gift to Rita and Billy from a friend far away.
P.S. Thanks to new technology. I communicated with Alice these two days as if she's in HK, but of course, she's in Calgary!

CH Tung Resigned
CH Tung just announced his resignation.
Although there should be more HK people wanting him to step down than to stay, it's so sad that Tung resigned not because of the people's power, but because of the Central Government's pressue.
When will we have true election of our CE?

Broke the record!
This is 3 March 2005, my second month in the WoC. Finally I broke the record of staying in one job for only one month since November last year.
Works here are simple but tedious. I have to develop more other interests or I will become stupid very easy.

My Elmo Cookie
Like my Elmo Cookie?
This cookie is made in Australia. Do you know what Australian bakery I am most impressed? That is a birthday cake delivered all the way from Australia to Canada!
That was 13 years ago at my 19th birthday, my first year in university, my first year in HUB, and my first year living alone.
I think it's a couple of days before my birthday. When I opened the mailbox, I saw a package sent by Gigi. When I opened the envelop, it was a birthday cake! Traveled all the way from Melbourne to Edmonton in an envelop!!!!!
It didn't crack a bit and the shape was perfectly good. We tried to cut and eat it during the little birthday party of Caroline and I (we were roommates and our birthdays were just two days apart). However, no matter how big the knife we used, how hard we cut and we even heated it up by the oven, but still we couldn't cut it into pieces.
We somehow tasted it a little bit. I forgot how it tasted, but sure it's the most special birthday cake I have ever had, a birthday cake traveled from Australia to Canada.
It is my birthday again tomorrow. I want to be quiet and chat with friends. See some of you tomorrow.

I have an event on 8 March so I have very big a chance that I can't see "The Blind Boys of Alabama", which will take place on the evening of 7 March :( There's also one year when I was taking my Master of Social Work that I was so tired and pratically slept through all the shows I watched!
Four good weekends coming to watch all the above performances plus Rita and Billy's wedding on the 13 March! Then I probably will be busy with a work trip to Beijing at the end of April. I will tell you more on this later.

新春大吉
新春大吉！ How's your holiday? Distribute/receive a lot of red pockets?
My five-day holiday have finally come to an end. Tomorrow everything will be back to normal (if I still remember how to work).
What did I do? Basically nothing. I only have Chinese tea with my few relatives on the father's side on the second day of the Chinese New Year (my brother needed to work on the CNY Day); watched The Incredibles (and ate a lot of pop corns); packed some old books to donate to a charity sale; did some reading and knitting, watched a lot of TV and ate a lot (and gained a lot of weight). That's it. That's my CNY holiday.
Any thing excited? Well, yes, before the CNY. As in last year, I was at the HK Alliance's booth at the Victoria Park "Flower Market" on the CNY Eve and the weekend before that to help Mr. Szeto Wah to 寫揮春 to raise funds for the Alliance.
It rained a little bit on the CNY Eve so there weren't as many people as last year and so did our business, but Mr. Szeto still wrote a lot of 揮春. Many of the people came to the Alliance's booth every year to ask Mr. Szeto to write 揮春 for the family. One dad told us that their family has been asking Mr. Szeto to write 揮春 since his eldest son was in primary school and now the once little kid had already graduated from the university!
The most popular 揮 春 was still 身體健康. Little kids liked 大吉大利. Some weird ones included 日日爆數 (they were sales); 身懷六甲 (needless to explain, she's an A-level student taking six subjects); 查找不足 (not only for Tung Chee Hwa but for us to remind ourselves to do better), etc.
I stayed at the booth till around 2:30am and visited some of the booths closest to the Alliance's. Here's what I got:
I wanted to buy a big stuffed strawberry, which I saw in TV but I couldn't find it in the market so I bought some happy face flowers instead.

1st Day @ WoC
This is my "official" first day at WoC. (Yesterday, I was there to handover.) Normally, first day has nothing special and not much to do. (Trust me, I must have worked more number of jobs than you do.) So this is correct again.
Unlike CUHK, where we had to use a small heater to warm up the room, temperature in the new office is normal. Unlike CUHK, the new office is small and noisy. People keep talking on the phone, fax machine ringing and the photocopier running behind me. After working at CUHK for a month and the Cattle Depot for another month, I am perfectly used to quiet space all by myself. I almost can't concentrate this morning.
Do you know what we have the most in my new office? Secretaries! We have 12 people in the team. Four of them have the positions as secretaries, one for our boss and one for every two officers. They all seem to be much more busier than I do today :P
Usually I will take care my own IT business. I set up my computer and network printer all by myself at CUHK. But today, I called the IT support. Well, I tried to interchange the position of the computer and the printer (it's simply unreasonable to have the printer closest to me but the computer at the far end). It seemed to be easy enough. However, the cables all interlocked together so I gave up or I will need to wait till Saturday afternoon...when I have spare time. So I called IT support. It made me somewhat looked like an idiot.
I still don't have internet access. Hope they will get it done tomorrow.

Ida @ CUHK
I thought I was at the Chinese University to stay. So I took some pictures of my room last Saturday to see how it will change when my contract ends at the end of the year.
So here is my room at a glaze. As far as I know everyone in the HK Institute of Asia Pacific Studies has a room on his/herself. Mine is actually a room for visiting scholar and no one is using it before so it's practically empty.
Here are my two desks. The best condition desks among the RAs:P They are not quite fit the work safety requirement though, and they hurt my neck and hands in a very short time.
This is my empty bookshelf. Only those box files are mine. Those white things on the top are government gazette from 1991 to 1996! Every one of our rooms has some "interesting" things. One has pillows and blankets. Another has sleeping bag and dot matrix printout. So I got a whole stack of gazette :)
This is how it looks outside the window. Nice? If you look down, you will see the train going in and out of the University station, and people having physical education classes. With a window this big, you simply don't need to turn on the light until you are off at 5pm!
